Curry leaves, also known as karuvepillai in Tamil and kariyapaaku in Telugu, are predominantly being used in Indian cuisine as a garnish. It is often fried in oil and is served atop several foods. As the name suggests, these are mainly used as a garnish for many curries. But most of the people often leave aside the curry leaves and devour on the rest of the dish. People often use curry leaves for their appearance and their role as garnish and underestimate their medicinal properties. This article pops out the medicinal powers of the wonderful curry leaves.

The curry leaves are obtained from the curry tree known as Murrayakoenigii, also known as sweet neem. These plants are vastly seen in the Indian subcontinent especially in the Southern and Western parts of the nation. The curry leaves house an important place in the Ayurveda and Siddha medicine. It is believed that curry leaves have anti-disease properties in general. One can reduce the chances of getting diseases through regular consumption of curry leaves. These leaves are so balanced in nutrients and metabolites, there would be no need to take supplements for medical purposes.

Several medicinal properties have been compactly packed onto the tiny curry leaves. They are known to possess the following properties:-

·        Antimicrobial

·        Anti-oxidants

·        Anti-inflammatory

·        Anti-carcinogenic (prevent cancer)

·        Hepatoprotective (protect the liver from toxins)

The curry leaves contain a chemical compound known as mahanimbine. They constitute 60% of the dry weight of the curry leaf. This alkaloid is capable of preventing the accumulation of fat in the body and also protects the body from stress-induced damage. The curry leaves are rich in antioxidants and they prevent the oxidation of cholesterol (this is the first step in the deposition of fat into blood vessels). Hence, they play a major role in maintaining cardiovascular health and ideal weight. All are based on the fact that the majority of heart problems arise from obesity and increased fat accumulations in the body. 

Also, it prevents the ill effects of oxidized cholesterol that can become detrimental to the heart. The oxidized cholesterol can gain access into the blood vessels and can block them. The oxidation of cholesterol is an important step in atherosclerosis which can lead to heart problems. Hence curry leaves can prevent all these.

Curry leaves are rich in soluble fibers and hence aid in the process of digestion and make sure that the stool is firm and solid. Surprisingly, curry leaves can prevent diarrhea and constipation problems. Also, the soluble fibers can reduce blood glucose levels by increasing insulin production in the pancreas. So, curry leaves can prevent diabetes mellitus.

Curry leaves are rich in iron and can be a potent source of hemoglobin in the body.  Hemoglobin predominantly occupies the RBC and it plays an important role in the distribution of oxygen to the individual cells for their metabolism. The less amount of hemoglobin in the body leads to a condition known as anemia. Hence curry leaves can be used as a supplement for anemic patients.

Curry leaves are rich in protein and antioxidants and can strengthen the hair. They promote the growth of keratin and in due process strengthen the hair follicles. It nourishes the hair and can prevent hair loss. To enjoy the benefits of curry leaves, make them into a paste and then massage them onto the hair. It can also be combined with other leaves to make oils for hair nourishment. Also, the curry leaves are good supplements for hyaluronic acid and can prevent joint pain and bone problems.

The curry leaves have a whole body purpose to provide promising health benefits from head to toe.. These properties are all power-packed on these small leaves. Curry leaves are one such superfood whose powers are underestimated. Hence don’t hesitate to eat the curry leaves the next time you see them on your plate. Following some small healthy practices like these can bring big changes in one’s health.
