The Halloween Spirit!-Emergence of the Celebration

2 Mins read

We all would have heard about Halloween right?? We always knew Halloween as a festival where they dressed up in costumes and ate candies. But Halloween is more than that!

Halloween- Origin story:

Halloween is celebrated on the 31st of October, that time of the year when it is specially dedicated to remembering the dead, including the saints and martyrs. It is also called All Hallows Eve, where Hallows mean Saints. The origin of this celebration dates back to 2000 years ago. The Celts lived in a place which is now called Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Northern France. They celebrated their new year on November 1.

The Celts also believed that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Celtic priests to make predictions about the future. This was an important source of comfort during the cold winter. To commemorate the event, the Celtic priests built huge bon fires, where people burnt their crops and animals, considering it as a sacrifice to the otherworldly spirits. During this celebration, the Celts wore costumes, especially the ones with animal skins and heads.

Then how did Halloween become so popular?
Around 1000 A.D., when more people started practicing Christianity, The Church made November 1 as all souls day, a day to honor the dead. It’s widely believed today that the church was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a church-friendly holiday. This all souls day was celebrated like the Samhain, with the bonfires and dressing up in costumes. The all saints day was also called the all hallows day, and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called all hallows eve, eventually, Halloween.

Due to European colonialization, this festival spread to all parts of the world. In the late 1800s, the Americans molded Halloween into a holiday more about the community and get together than about ghosts and witchcraft. Thus Halloween parties for both children and adults became the most common way to celebrate the day. Parties focused on games, foods, and costumes. Thus the modern-day Halloween came into existence.

As we are halfway through the festival season in India, the thing that makes my heart warm is that the people around the world also have their festival season around this time of the year. Around November and December, we know it’s cold and dark. The thing that matters here is that we people managed to search the light and celebrate festivals to make us feel happy. Similarly, we should look for the light in dark times and turn it into something positive because that’s what life is all about!

Happy Festive season!
