The liquid gold of health- astonishing benefits of ghee

3 Mins read

The Indian cuisine is best known for its soft and tasty bread, the best curries, the biryani, and of course divine sweets. Sorry for those who are reading this while dieting, I think I reminded you of your cheat days.

ghee is the key element in most the rich Indian foods

One thing for sure is that all these dishes are rich in texture and flavors. There is one thing that all have in common and that is the reason for its richness. The special ingredient in all of them is ghee.

Ghee, also known as clarified butter is popularly used in Indian cuisine. Ghee is sacred to the Hindu religion and is given as an offering to the fire god (Agni). It is used to elevate the dishes like it enhances the smoky flavor when added in biryani and it enhances the richness of sweets.

Ghee not only helps in elevating the taste but health also. There are a lot of health properties concerned with the consumption of ghee. The following table shows the nutritional content of ghee.

NutrientValue in 100g of ghee
Saturated fat62
Monounsaturated fat29
Polyunsaturated fat3
Omega-3-fatty acids1.5
Omega-6-fatty acids2.2
Omega-9-fatty acids25

Ghee is rich in omega fatty acids and this is essential for maintaining a good cardiovascular condition. These fatty acids are required for the growth and development of individual cells and hence have a multi-purpose benefit.

Ghee contains almost all the vitamins and hence are important for good health. It is rich in ant-oxidants and tumor suppressants hence improving immunity. Ghee is one of the ingredients to be present in a good diet.

One may think that ghee can make one fat and is not ideal for weight loss due to the fat content. But in reality, ghee is good for weight loss. There is a compound called CLA (combined linolenic acid) which plays an important role in weight loss.

When ghee is added to hot food like cooked rice, chapati, etc. the flavor and taste get enhanced. Also, it increases the rate of absorption of nutrients in the small intestine and also reduces the acidity of the stomach.

Another added advantage in ghee is that even though it is derived from milk, the amount of lactose and casein present in it are negligible (0.05 & 0.02 milligrams respectively). The reason for this is in the process of making ghee. The simmering and boiling of milk reduce them.

ghee is a better option for lactose intolerants

Ghee is one of the essential fats to be consumed. These fats are required for better bone and joint life. There are fat pads present in some prominent joints like the knee, fingers, etc. their role is to absorb shock and prevent mechanical damage to the joints.

Even though ghee has plenty of health benefits, there is one major problem seen in ghee. We must not forget that it contains fat. Around 97% of ghee is pure fat. Hence this can pose some serious health issues like cholesterol deposition in blood vessels leading to heart problems and can also lead to obesity.

But ghee can reduce the levels of arachidonic acid up to 65% in the blood when it is consumed as the only fat. Research says that this compound can be a major cause for fat deposition, leading to atherosclerosis.

You can ask me that I was told initially that ghee is required for good cardiovascular health and ideal for weight loss but now I am saying that ghee can cause obesity and CVR. Quantity is the one that determines all these.

We can enjoy the above-listed health benefits when we consume within limits or we have to face the consequences mentioned above. 2-3 tablespoons of ghee are recommended for everyday consumption. considering the above health benefits, there are no oppositions that ghee can be called the liquid gold of health.

On the whole, consumption of healthy foods like ghee and also regularly working out can reduce the risk of getting most of the prominent and deadly diseases.
